Deadly tick. find out what it can do to you. its bite. Lyme disease caused by deadly tick. It makes headlines. But there are plenty of other reasons to avoid ticks. New research highlights the latest in a growing list of tick-borne threats. A distant relative of Lyme disease that is easily confused with other ailments.
The study mentions that a type of bacteria with a complicated name. Like Borrelia miyamotoi. It should be on the radar when people in areas where Lyme is endemic have summer fevers that are not otherwise explainable. It is one of several recently discovered tick-related illnesses in different parts of the United States. A reminder to learn about ticks no matter where you live.
"People should be quite clear and aware of the diseases what can be transmitted. Ticks in your area," says Dr. Peter J. Krause of the majestic Yale University. An extraordinary professional who reviewed the whole case. "And they should be very clear and know how to ignore the contagion or rubbing with ticks."
WHAT IS IT. WHAT IS THIS NEW INFECTION CAUSED BY THE MORTAÑL TICK?
The first case in the United States was reported in New Jersey in 2013 in an 80-year-old cancer survivor who for four months became increasingly confused, had difficulty walking and lost 14 kilograms (30 pounds).
Doctors discovered and reported a new, oddly shaped spiral-like bacterium that resembled Lyme in his spinal fluid, but caused a relapsing fever more closely related to other tick-borne illnesses. Although it can be cured with antibiotics, doctors know little about B. miyamotoi.
Monday's study offers some clues. The discoverers at Imugen, Inc. studied blood tests from sufferers in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York whose doctors suspected tick-borne diseases and used that lab.
During the tick surge in 2013 and 2014, the lab discovered 97 reports of a new infection. That's just 1 percent of the blood tests and is similar to the detection of a better-known tick-borne disease called Ana plasmosis, the researchers reported in Annals of Internal Medicine.
The bacteria are carried by deer ticks, also known as blacklegged ticks, which can cause Lyme disease and two other diseases, babesiosis and Ana plasmosis.
IS NOT THE ONLY NEW CONCERN. THE DEADLY TICK IS NOT THE ONLY NEW CONCERN.
Two new tick-borne viruses have surfaced in the north-central United States and neither has a specific treatment yet.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed nine Heartland virus cases and one death, said CDC entomologist Roger Nasci. There is also the Bourbon virus, which was reported last year after the death of a man in Kansas and was named for his county of origin.
HOW MANY DISEASES CAN BANKNOTES TRANSMIT?
The CDC counts 14 diseases linked to specific tick species in the United States, although they estimate the number may be 10 times higher. It is too early to know how widespread the newly discovered diseases are. But people can become infected with more than one tick-borne disease simultaneously. There's no reason to stay inside the deadly tick. Health officials say it's important to enjoy the outdoors and be physically active.
Many people are afraid and also very concerned about a nasty tick bite, says Nasci, who heads the parvovirus disease branch. "Not all ticks are infected."
If you get bitten, remove the tick as soon as possible.
PREVENTION IS BEST.
No matter where you live, the CDC's advice is similar.
